What is a dog slatmill?

A dog slatmill is a treadmill with no motor. The running surface is a series of slats mounted on bearings, and it moves only because the dog pushes it backwards. The dog sets the pace, and the dog can stop simply by stopping.

That one difference — the dog driving the belt rather than the belt driving the dog — is what separates a slatmill from the motorised treadmills sold for canine rehabilitation, and it is why slatmills turn up in conditioning work for sled breeds, weight-pull dogs and dog sports.

It also adds resistance. A dog on a slatmill is doing more work per stride than the same dog on a powered belt at the same speed, so sessions start much shorter than people expect.

Where to start

A note on use. A mill is conditioning equipment for a fit, healthy dog, used under supervision, in short sessions, with the dog free to step off. It is not a way to exhaust a dog in place of training or company, and it is not suitable for growing puppies or dogs with unresolved joint problems.
